The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word that means "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name around the globe.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an entirely different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
